I have written quite a bit about Daniel & Mary Robins. They arrived in Amwell Township as early as 1715, making the family among the earliest to physically settle in Hunterdon County. Despite the hardship of raising a family in the wilderness, the Robins succeeded very well. So well, that they got the attention of a newspaper writer.

On July 30, 1733, an article appeared in the New England Weekly Journal as well as The Boston Gazette, describing Daniel Robins’ remarkable health and longevity under such trying circumstances, as well as the prolific family he and wife Mary raised. Just a few months later, on Oct. 1, 1733, the story was reprinted in The Penny London Post, under the heading “Foreign Affairs.” It was indeed noteworthy. (Many thanks to Roberta Jaffer for sharing a copy of this news article.)

As you will see, Daniel and Mary Robins had many more children than are accounted for here. Part of the explanation is that daughters got subsumed into the families of their husbands, and their maiden names were forgotten (much to the frustration of genealogists), which also explains why the women who married into the Robins family so frequently lacked their maiden names, and sometimes even their given names. Another explanation is that in the 1730s, record-keeping was a very low priority.

All the family trees on this website are focused on residents of Hunterdon County. Children of daughters are included but not granddaughters. As is my custom, surnames of spouses whose families also have published trees on this website are highlighted in green. Daniel Robins was in his mid 40s by the time he came to Amwell Township in Hunterdon County from Monmouth County. When the article above was published, Robins was then 66 years old, and although he was in good health, he only lived four more years.

Footnotes:

  1. 12/7/20: Susanna’s surname Hopkins needs proof. She may have been confused with the family of George Hopkins of Monmouth County who wrote his will on Sept. 15, 1775 naming one Richard Robins, “my friend,” his executor. But George Hopkins did not name a daughter Susannah in his will, and I have no information on whether this Richard Robins had a son Isaac. Thanks to Marshall Lake for calling this into question.
