When listing members of the Fox family living in Hunterdon County, it is important to distinguish between the English Fox family and the German one. This tree will deal with both families.

It is interesting to know that relatives of the original Quaker, George Fox of England, settled in Hunterdon County. However, they were not direct descendants. The Hunterdon English Fox family came from George Fox’s brother John Fox and his wife Ann Chambers.

The English Fox Family

First Generation:

George Fox (c.1670-after 1721) was the son of John Fox (c.1628-1718) and Ann Chambers (c.1630-1706) of England. George married in England in the 1670s an unknown wife and had a son Joseph about whom I have no information. He married second on Oct. 5, 1693 at Horninghold, Leicester, Jane Palmer, daughter of Christopher and Mary Palmer. George and Jane left for Burlington County, in the Province of West New Jersey around 1705 with children George and Mary. Their first three children either died young or remained in England.

In 1719, George Fox bought a large farm from Charles Wolverton in Amwell Township. His children, George and Mary, married into the Wolverton family. Many Hunterdon families married in to the Fox Family, some of them having their own trees on this website. Their surnames are colored green. Go to the Families page where you will find links to their trees, a good example being the Wolverton Tree where Roger’s family is listed.
