Daniel Bray of Kingwood Township to collect the boats that Washington needed to get his army across the Delaware River before the British caught up with them, the surname Bray has a certain caché in Hunterdon County. But the family traces back much further, to a Rev. Jonathan Bray of Middletown, Monmouth County, who arrived from England in 1686.

Some Family Tree rules:  All the family trees on this website are focused on residents of Hunterdon County. Once a family moves away, I lose track of them. Children of daughters are included, but not their grandchildren. Because so many of these families are inter-related, I have taken to highlighting in green the surnames of families that have their own published trees. (I am not adding the links to their trees for fear it might overwhelm my website.) I have made the fonts for the 4th Р6th generations are much smaller in order to fit the lines on the screen.

And finally, feel free to make additions or corrections in the comments section below or by email.

Rev. Jonathan Bray was an English immigrant who settled in Monmouth County with the children from his first wife Susannah. His second wife Anna had immigrated previously and married Andrew Bowne of Monmouth (1667-bef. 1713) and had three children with him. Bowne died in his mid 40s. (Anna’s great grandson, John Bowne, M.D. (1767-1857), moved to Amwell Township in Hunterdon County.) Soon after Andrew Bowne’s death,  Anna married the widower Rev. John Bray. The Brays were of Scotch descent, so we can assume that the ministers Jonathan and son James were Presbyterians.
