Early view of Barber Cemetery in Delaware Township

The Barber Cemetery, located on Lambertville-Headquarters Road in Delaware Township, Hunterdon County, NJ, is one of the oldest cemeteries in the county. It is located on a two-acre plot and contains upwards of 516 burials, beginning as early as the 1740s.

Barbers Burying Ground began its life (so to speak) as a private cemetery for the Barber Family, headed by Samuel Barber (c.1690-1751) and wife Eliada Johnson. Their stones have not been found, but as the head of the Barber family in Delaware Township it seems most likely that they were buried here. (For more on the Barber family, see “The Two John Barbers.” See also the Barber Family Tree, which needs updating.)

Hunterdon historian, Dr. George H. Larison, wrote an article about the Barber Burying Ground at some unknown date. (His article can be found in the Larison Collection at the Hunterdon Co. Historical Society.) He described the cemetery as “near Mount Airy Station on the Flemington Railroad, running to Lambertville, where many older people of note were long since laid to rest.” He pointed out that no one knows who the first person to be buried there was, but Larison thought it could have happened as early as 1750. He also pointed out that many of the families buried here were very prominent in the neighborhood at one time but are now long gone. He mentioned in particular, in addition to members of the Barber family, the DeReamers, Severns, Leonards and Oliphants. But other families were still around when he wrote his article, specifically Andersons, Bownes, Covenhoven (now Conover), Corles, Forsts, Farlees, Hagamans, Hoppocks, Johnsons, Lamberts, Larisons, Moores, Pralls, Runks, Romines, Woolseys, and Wilsons.

Given the number of burials in this ancient cemetery, it a very valuable one for family researchers. The list below of known burials is not limited to information found on the gravestones. In many cases, the stone are cracked, toppled or so eroded they are illegible. This list provides birth & death dates, parents and spouses wherever known, relying on the usual genealogical sources. For exact burial information, one can always consult Find-a-Grave. It should be understood that this list is not definitive. There are probably some mistakes, and so I welcome corrections and additions which can be added to the comments section at the end of the article. (Names added after the original publication date will be shown in dark red.)

The Barber Burying Ground relies on care provided by volunteers. If you are interested in helping out, please contact the Barbers Burying Ground Association, at 219 Lambertville-Headquarters Road, Stockton, NJ 08559. You can also connect with them by visiting their website at http://www.barbersburyingground.org. There are also still burial spots available. (Note: For some reason, this link does not work, but searching on Barbers Burying Ground will get you to the website.)

The original records up to 1888 have been lost. An earlier list of burials here was compiled in 2002 by Deborah Naylor.  For this list, I am adding names and other information from my own research over the years. Also, I have listed married women under their maiden name instead of their married name, unless the maiden name was unknown. This may cause more confusion, but I prefer it. If a spouse is also buried here, I note that they are listed ‘above’ or ‘below.’ Originally, I thought I’d have to break the article up into two but realized it would make checking for spouses more difficult. So this ends up being the longest article I have published so far on this website.

Dr. Larison wrote: ‚ÄúHere too lies Caleb Farlee’s bones, who celebrated his 21st birthday on that memorable hot 17th day of June, 1777 in the Battle of Monmouth. So worn and fatigued was he there in the conflict with comrades falling on every side that he gave up to the fates of war, to fall in battle as it seemed to him inevitable to escape [ ] day on which he was twenty-one years old.‚Äù Apologies for they hyperbole. However, Dr. Larison apparently got this version from Samuel Barber and John Wilson who were also present at the battle.

Dr. Larison wrote: “This burial ground lost one in the war with Great Britain in the year of 1814 and for expediency made his grave to suit elsewhere. It was Captain Lambert Hoppock who at the head of his command fell from an Indian rifle shot near Plattsburg, New York. His whole Company were recruited from this locality. All these that lie beneath this sod were equal to any of their day and in peace or war, came up to the measure of their requirements.”

Dr. Larison: “From numerous small offices held by many there were members of our State Legislature as follows, two of which served in both the Assembly and Senate such as: John Lambert, Sr., John Lambert, Jr., and Andrew Larison in the Assembly. John Lambert, Sr., was also a member of Congress and sat with that body in Philadelphia before the Capital was fired at Washington. He was born in 1746 and was well educated and informed, lived on his large farm situated three miles west of these grounds, overlooking from his large stone mansion the beautiful valley of the Delaware from Lambertville on the south which bears his name to many miles northwest. This old stone mansion still stands and the landscape view has become grander. John Lambert, Sr., for a time represented New Jersey in the United States Senate and under the old State Constitution he was chosen Governor of our State. All these offices he filled with ability and much satisfaction to his constituents. He died in 1823 and was buried in the Lambert plot in the centre of these grounds where a large plain marble slab marks his grave.

John Lambert was born about 100 years ago on his father, Gershom Lambert’s farm of about 500 acres, situated between these grounds and those of John Lambert, Sr. He held many offices of trust in the Township in which he lived and served his constituents in the Assembly and Senate of our State. He lived much over 90 years, died at his late residence in Lambertville in the month of March, 1883, leaving a large estate and no children.‚Äù

The Larison family is a challenge inasmuch as the name was sometimes spelled Larason, and it is hard to distinguish between a deliberate spelling and a clerical error. So I have listed them all as Larisons, with apologies to descendants whose families preferred the Larason spelling.
