Thanks to the efforts of Gen. Daniel Bray of Kingwood Township to collect the boats that Washington needed to get his army across the Delaware River before the British caught up with them, the surname Bray has a certain caché in Hunterdon County. But the family traces back much further, to a Rev. Jonathan Bray of Middletown, Monmouth County, who arrived from England in 1686.
Some Family Tree rules: All the family trees on this website are focused on residents of Hunterdon County. Once a family moves away, I lose track of them. Children of daughters are included, but not their grandchildren. Because so many of these families are inter-related, I have taken to highlighting in green the surnames of families that have their own published trees. (I am not adding the links to their trees for fear it might overwhelm my website.) I have made the fonts for the 4th – 6th generations are much smaller in order to fit the lines on the screen.
And finally, feel free to make additions or corrections in the comments section below or by email.
First Generation:
(1) Rev. Jonathan Bray (c.1660 – c.1717)
| m. 1) Susannah Stout (1675 – 1715)
| m. 2) Anna Seabrook
Rev. Jonathan Bray was an English immigrant who settled in Monmouth County with the children from his first wife Susannah. His second wife Anna had immigrated previously and married Andrew Bowne of Monmouth (1667-bef. 1713) and had three children with him. Bowne died in his mid 40s. (Anna’s great grandson, John Bowne, M.D. (1767-1857), moved to Amwell Township in Hunterdon County.) Soon after Andrew Bowne’s death, Anna married the widower Rev. John Bray. The Brays were of Scotch descent, so we can assume that the ministers Jonathan and son James were Presbyterians.

In 1935, my parents bought the 15-acre (?) place, fieldstone house and barn, from a Bray, I believe it was a Daniel Bray. The property, extant, lies at the west end of Sandy Ridge Road, Stockton.
Thanks for what you do. It’s significant work.

Please explain why Rev. John Bray living in Middletown, NJ had to get permission from his mother in law (Mary Seabrook, Whitlock) to sell land in Exeter, New England. There is a Will of Richard Bray (from England) leaving land to his wife Mary, son John & daughter Mary in Exeter after his death. The son & daughter were underage. This land was sold to John Sleeper of Exeter and was recorded Aug. 31, 1689. Rev. John Bray would have been a grown man and only IF Mary Seabrook/Whitlock was his MOTHER would he need her to also sign off on the selling of the land. If Mary Seabrook/Whitlock was first Bray then Rev John Bray married his 1/2 sister Anna Seabrook.

Interesting question, but I do not have an answer. The family this far back is beyond my research area. Perhaps another descendant can help out.

Actually, if you’ll look at the date that Rev. John Bray sold land in Exeter NH with consent of his mother, Mary M. Whitlock. It was August 1689. Mary Whitlock could not have been his mother-in-law because Rev. John didn’t marry Ann, the widow of Andrew Bowne until between 1711 (after Peter Bowen son of Andrew & Ann was born) and before Ann the widow had a child by Rev. John in July 1713.

On the question regarding Anna Seabrook Bowne Bray: I believe I have reconciled her parentage. I suggest that Thomas Seabrook married Mary Compton not Herbert. I am considering that Mary Herbert John’s mother, however, do not believe she was the wife of Thomas Whitlock. The deed that has Mary M Whitlock’s signature I believe that she is mother-in-law and mother of Anna Seabrook. The writing on the document is not clear. Anna refused to be administrator of Rev John Bray’s will and assigned it to his son John by his first wife. I think the writing would clarify that it was sold in the settlement of his will in 1716. If you are interested I have all of this in Wikitree. com with John Bray-1479 and Susannah Seabrook-95. There are duplicates of John Bray bring up the question that they are half brother/sister. The source by the Compton’s were obtained by going to Middleton and doing the research.

You may very well be right about Mary Compton’s spouses. These people were not Hunterdon residents, so I have not really researched them, but relied on others. How can Mary be both mother-in-law and mother of Anna Seabrook?

I agree. The key is the document selling the land which identified John Bray of Middletown and his mother Mary M. Whitlock of Middletown took place in the year 1689. He states he was selling with the consent of his mother thus the land was part of an inheritance; not land he bought himself & was selling. The date is very clear. John Bray of Middletown didn’t marry his 1st wife until somewhere about 1708 area. He married Ann, the widow of Andrew Bowne about 1712 area.

Edit of this comment March 6 2021. Thomas Seabrook’s widow could not have married the husband of Mary M Whitlock who signe the deed of 1689 for sale of land in Exeter, N. H. Richard Bray m 1. Mary __________1645-1650 and died 1665 as dated by administration of his estate naming Mary and two children John under 21 and Mary under 18. In 1666 Thomas Seabrook and his wife Mary were in a land transaction and had Daniel, a son born 1667.
