The family of Samuel Green and Sarah Bull were among the earliest settlers of Amwell Township in Hunterdon County. The part of Amwell they lived in became Delaware Township in 1838. Their descendants were important to the town’s history, and married into other notable local families. Because this one family had such an impact, I thought it appropriate to list them all, or at least down to the great-grandchildren of Samuel and Sarah—all 154 of them. Each of their four children had an astounding number of grandchildren: 21, 50, 31 and 52.
I was interested to know what became of them. Many stayed in Hunterdon, and some moved on. I have designated the primary residence, whenever possible. Since many of them lived in several places, I chose the last known residence. As best as I can tell, out of the 154 great grandchildren, at least 89 remained in Hunterdon County, and 65 either moved on or are unaccounted for.
I have arranged this list by generations in order to identify contemporaries. This can be very useful information when several people act together on something for no apparent reason. Family connections always count for a lot.
There are omissions in this list, and no doubt some mistakes. I hope that readers who spot them will share what they know.
The numbering system may seem a little odd, but that is because allowance is made for the children of Samuel Green by his first wife, Margaret Kemp. However, since I have not included the grandchildren from this marriage (Samuel Green Jr. and Abba Light), the third generation numbering is not technically correct. Please consider the ID numbers as merely identification guides for this particular article.
I have only included four generations, but that is quite enough, thanks to those exponentially large 18th century families. To find someone you’re looking for, it’s best to use your browser search function rather than the search box on this page.

Dear Marfy
Thanks for this goldmine! It is possible you got the Frances Opdyke and John Hoagland (45) info from my ancestry.com genealogy. If so, I got the information from “History and genealogy of the Hoagland family in America”, by Daniel Hoogland Carpenter, a copy of which is in the Hunterdon County Historical Society. That book may also help clear up Margaret Green’s John Hoagland. I have not verified his sources, however. Most likely they lived in Kingwood.
Perhaps you have some experience with the Carpenter book and could advise of its authority or lack thereof?
Thanks again for your wonderful work.

Ron,
I visited the HCHS today and found the Carpenter book on the Hoagland family. It did not include the John Hoagland who married #130 Margaret Green. However, Dirck Jansen Hoogland Family History, 1657-1976 by George Williams Hoagland was also on the shelf and that book did identify John Hoagland as the son of William and Rachel Hoogland, and named John’s 12 children. However, it stated that Hoagland was married to Elizabeth Green, rather than Margaret. He and his wife (whoever she was) moved to Northumberland Co., PA where they both died. Unfortunately, I failed to look up the John Hoagland who married Frances Opdycke. Maybe next trip.

30 Samuel Opdycke (1849-1801) m. Susannah Robeson
Don’t believe he could have been born in 1849 since he died in 1801. Suggest the year should be 1749.

Thanks, as usual. Did you ever see a connection to Sarah Wells (1694-1796)and William Bull (1689-1755) of Orange County, NY? Interesting if both of my parents were descended from the same couple! We went to the Bull Family Reunion in Goshen NY in 2012.

Sharon, Richard Bull’s parents came directly from England to Gloucester County, NJ. I don’t think there is a William Bull in that family.

197 Daniel Vansyckle (1790-1861) no information. Here’s some updated information:
BIBLE: A fellow researcher on the Internet took the time to go to Rutger’s University in New Jersey in July 2006 to look at the Bible records held by the New Jersey Historical and Genealogical Society at that location. He found in a folder marked as record 5161 the following material:
FAMILY RECORDS OF SAMUEL PARRY of Clinton, NJ

Daniel Van Syckle married Mary Carhart, daughter of Cornelius Carhart and Sarah (Dunham) Carhart. She was born April 30, 1791 in New Jersey and died October 15, 1836 in Mount Pleasant, Burlington, New Jersey.
Daniel and Mary had at least one daughter, Selinda Van Syckel, born December 16, 1815 in New Jersey and died August 31, 1887 in Pluckemin, Somerset, New Jersey. She married on 29 January 1840 in Milford, Hunterdon, New Jersey, Samuel Parry, son of Samuel Parry and Martha (Thomas) Parry. Samuel and Selinda had at least two children:

99 Hon. John Robeson Opdycke (1776 – 1848) m. Rebecca McAtee; Alexandria Twp.
In Marriage Records of Hunterdon County New Jersey 1795-1875 by Hiram Deats, p. 209 it lists the following marriage:
John Opdycke and Rebecca M. Catt, April 24, 1803, 1-71 (Hunt).
Then, in the “Additional Marriages and Corrections section at the end of the volume, p. 359 it makes a correction regarding this marriage entry which reads as follows:
Rebecca McAtee (not Rebecca M. Catt) and John Updyke (not Opdycke), Apr. 24, 1803, 1-71 (Hunt).
Does the History of the Opdyke Family always use the Opdyke spelling or do some families carry the Updike spelling?

Christie, Generally speaking, members of the Opdycke family who lived in Kingwood and Alexandria Townships spelled their name Updyke or Opdyke, while members of the family in Amwell spelled it Opdycke. That’s just generally speaking. Hon. John’s name shows up in various spellings, including Opdycke. The marriage was performed by Rev. Hunt, who may have been used to the Alexandria Twp. spelling. Luther Opdycke was also an Alexandria resident whose name often appears as Updike or Opdyke. One of these days I might go back and adjust the spelling on this list.

I have been looking at the Green family of North Carolina because they are my nieces’s ancestors, and I suspect that they are from the same group. My former brother-in-law was from Watauga County, NC and the Green part of the family settled in Rowan County, NC after they left New Jersey. William Green was born about 1671 in England, which puts him in the right age range for a brother of your Samuel and the locations are fairly close.
[from “Heritage of Watauga County North Carolina”, which is a local genealogy book and may or may not be correct.]
“Ms. Betty Brassington, a Greene descendant in Mighigan, has suggested that the father of William Green of Trenton may have been Richard Green, who was born in England in the 1650s. Richard left from the port of Hull-on-Humber, Yorkshire, on the ship “Shield”, in October 1678, and landed at the site of present Burlington, New Jersey. William Green was born about 1678-80 in England. A definite connection with Richard has not yet been established.”
“E. Cooley, in “genealogies of Early Settlers of Trenton and Ewing”, p. 78-79, asserts: “Dissatisfied with some new relation in his father’s family, (William) left his native land, England, at the early age of twenty, and landed at the port of Philadelphia. Trying to return to England soon after, he went to Long Island, where he met the family of John Reeder. He married Joanna Reeder and returned to Ewing Township, New Jersey about 1700 and settled there. He was one of the first judges of Hunterdon County.” …
William Green’s home, built in 1717, was the first brick home in Trenton, and still stands on the campus of Trenton State University. A plaque, erected in 1927 there, indicates: “This was the home of William Green, 3rd, a soldier in Washington’s Army at the Battles of Trenton and Monmouth. Home built by his grandfather, William Green, in 1717.” William died 16 June 1722 in Trenton, Ewing Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. His grave marker still stands above his buial place in the Ewing Presbyterian Cemetery, 100 Scotch Road, Trenton.
William’s will, written 11 January 1721/2, is extant. In it he named his wife Joanna and the following children: Richard, Joseph, William, Joanna, Sarah, Benjamin, John, Jeremiah, Isaac, Esther, and Mary. The last six named were under age. Executors were sons Richard and Joseph. Ms. Brassington suggests that these children and William’s grandsons stayed in the vicinity of Trenton, except for sons John and Jeremiah, who went to North Carolina, and Isaac, who may have moved to Sussex County, N.J.”

Elaine, I am happy to have all this information about William Green and his family, but sorry to tell you that there is no evidence that William and Samuel are related. Many people have searched for a connection between these two Green men in West Jersey, and all have come up empty.

Thank you for the source of information about William Green. I am a descendant of this line. My DNA is old, my great grandfather Samuel Green was born in 1808. I connect with DNA to a number of descendants of William and Joanna.

For whomever wrote the Email to me from Goodspeed Histories saying they would like to have the information I was talking about, I really do appreciate it so much! But they did not let me know if John Beavers GANO ( father of DUTILLA GANO, my husband’s Gr.Gr.Grandmother) were a son of Steven GANO & Catherine Beavers as so many have on the internet – or connected to any of these families? ) I have not been able to prove or seen the proof these people have. So before I send the continuation of descendants of the THIS GANO & BEAVERS FAMILY – I need to know if these are his parents (see Above comment) to be able to say they are THEIR descendants?
I don’t mind sending it anyway, if you STILL want it, as long as you know I don’t have the PROOF, OF PARENTS & SON CONNECTIONS – although everything points to them being the parents.? Also many of the names above sounds familiar from the Land Deed I had mentioned from Elias & Dutilla in 1969 we received from my husband’s mother, Olive Ida Snyder Carr’s Estate. I could be wrong, but the name METTLER sounds familiar as part of the LAW FIRM from N.J., representing the descendants of Elias JOHNSON & Dutilla GANO?
Thanks Jan :)
