In my article, The Heaths of Locktown, I have described family of the original Heath immigrant to settle in West New Jersey, here designated as First Generation. That should serve as an introduction to this tree. Shortly after first publishing this tree, I heard from a Fox descendant who had some suggestions and corrections. As a result, the tree has already been updated.
Having published many family trees by now (see the Home Page for Families), I will highlight in green the surnames of families that have published trees so far. (I am not adding the links for fear it might overwhelm my website.) However, there is no guarantee that the person whose name is highlighted will show up on my published tree. Please remember that children of daughters will be listed, but not grandchildren.
I have a lot of loose ends. Also, I doubt I can keep all these trees up to date, so corrections and additions are welcome. In fact, this tree has several notes in italics, thanks to input from some Heath descendants.
First Generation, the Immigrants:
(1) Andrew Heath (1667 – 1720) of Hopewell Twp.
| m. 1) Elizabeth Barrett (1656 – c.1700)
Alternative dates for Andrew are 1654-1720 and for Elizabeth 1658-1699.
The Desc.’s of Andrew Heath, vol. 1 gives her full name as Elizabeth Barrett Venables Bannor and yet identifies her parents as John Barrett and Sarah Bate. The Genealogy also gives a pedigree for Andrew going back three generations.
| m. 2) Hannah Buckingham Clark (c.1675 – after 1744)
Second Generation:
(1) Andrew Heath & 1) Elizabeth Barrett
| (2.1) Elizabeth Heath (c.1685 – 1730) & Nathaniel Pettit Jr. (1676 – c.1744) of Somerset Co.
| (2.2) John Heath * (c.1691 – 1724) & Mary __ (c.1700 – after 1730) of Amwell Twp.
| (2.3) Andrew Heath (c.1695 – 1745) & Mary Pettit Horseman (c.1700 – after 1747) of Amwell Twp.
| (2.4) Sarah Heath (c.1697 – 1717) of Hopewell, unmarried
(1) Andrew Heath & 2) Hannah Buckingham Clark
| (2.5) Richard Heath (c.1705 – 1747) of Bethlehem Twp.
| | m. 1) Sarah Willson (c.1707 – c.1740)
| | m. 2) Mary Gordon (c.1710 – )
| (2.6) Martha Heath (c.1708 – ) no information
* John Heath: There are several early John Heaths in or near New Jersey whose parentage is unknown.
1) John Heath, born c.1650, wife Mary died 1694, daughter Mary (c.1690-1694) Philadelphia Friends Meeting.
2) John Heath born c.1700, married Hannah Buckingham (c.1705-1778), lived in New Castle, Delaware where he died in 1748. His will of 1747 named daughter Elizabeth, “now Elizabeth John,” and cousin Allice Cantrol. I do not know if this John Heath is related to the Heaths of Hunterdon County. Nor do I know if the Hannah Buckingham who married John Heath of Delaware was related to the Hannah Buckingham (c.1657-after 1744) who married Andrew Heath, Sr. of Hopewell Twp.
3) John Heath (b. England – 1806 Basking Ridge, Somerset Co.) m. Ann Lewis, had daughter Ann c.1725 who married John Stryker Lake. Not at all sure about this.
4) John Heath was born Feb. 6, 1748 in Somerset Co., married Dina Lake (1750-1825) c. 1769 and had three children: Lewis (1770-1852), Margaret b. 1773 and Ann b. 1775. This John is thought to have died 1831, but location is unknown.
Third Generation:
(1) Andrew Heath & 1) Elizabeth Barrett
| (2.1) Elizabeth Heath & Nathaniel Pettit Jr. of Somerset Co.
| | (3.1) Elizabeth Pettit (1714 – 1783) & Dennis Wolverton (1709 – 1774)
| | (3.2) Abigail Pettit (c.1715 – c.1812) & Isaac Wolverton (1706 – 1770)
| | (3.3) Andrew Pettit (c.1716 – 1748) & Dinah Wolverton (1711 – c.1811)
| | (3.4) Thomas Pettit (1718 – 1758)
| | (3.5) Mary Pettit (c.1720 – ) & Thomas Wolverton (1717 – 1759)
| | (3.6) Jonathan Heath Pettit (1724 – 1768) & Deborah Robbins (1724 – 1791)
| | (3.7) Nathaniel Pettit (1724 – 1803) & Margaret McFarlane
| | (3.8) John Pettit (c.1726 – )
| | (3.9) George Pettit (c.1727 – 1775)
| | (3.10) Isaac H. Pettit (c.1728 – 1805) & Martha Goodin (1730 – 1815)
| | (3.11) Charles Pettit (1730 – 1806) & Mary Smith (1734 – 1805)
The Pettit family in Hunterdon is a very large one and will eventually get its own tree. The Wolverton spouses were all children of Charles Wolverton (1660-1746) and Mary Leet Chadwick (1681-1751).
| (2.2) John Heath & Mary __ of Amwell Twp.
| | (3.1) John Heath [Jr] (c.1716 – 1737), no further information.
His father got the tract of land adjacent to Daniel Robins’, but I have not figured out what happened after John Sr. died intestate in 1725. Mary Heath m. 2d Thomas Hunt, who took over administration of John Heath’s estate. Hunt’s LW&T 1789 left part of his homestead to grandson Henry Reading.
| (2.3) Andrew Heath & Mary Pettit Horseman of Amwell
| | (3.1) Andrew Heath (c.1721 – 1777) & Magdalene Engers * (c.1725 – after 1802) of Amwell
| | (3.2) Mary Heath (c.1722 – 1792) & Wheeler Kitchen (c.1724 – c.1785) of Sussex Co., NJ
| | (3.3) David Heath (c.1724 – ~1820) & Mary Worthington (c.1735 – after 1814) of Morris Co., NJ

| | (3.8) Catharine Heath (c.1736 – ), no further information
| | (3.9) Sarah Heath (c.1738 – ), no further information
* Magdalene Engers: Note must be taken here to explain the family of Magdalena Engers Heath. A Heath descendant, Chester Bowling, has come across an explanation for her origins that also shows us that the Heaths had contact with Pennsylvania families, even though most of their property was located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, on the other side of the river. A deed of Dec. 7, 1748 concerns the conveyance of 118+ acres in Chester County, Pennsylvania by Jacob and Ester Engers to their son-in-law Andrew ‘Hight.’ And in 1751, Andrew and Magdalena Hight conveyed a two-acre lot to the trustees of the Coventry Mennonite Church, one of whom was Jacob Engers. The History of the Mennonites of Franconian Conference by J. C. Wenger explains (p.18) that Magdalena Engers was the daughter of Jacob and Esther Engers of Chester County, Pennsylvania.
My only quibble with this is that at the same time that Heath bought property from the Engers, he had acquired land in Hunterdon County which he inherited from his father Andrew in 1745. I hope that a record of Heath’s sale of this farm in Pennsylvania will turn up some day.

| | | (4.1) Richard Williamson Heath (1770 – 1850) & Susan Eliz. Rittenhouse (1782 – 1837), moved to Ohio
Richard Heath apparently died shortly after marrying Moykee Williamson. Son Richard testified to his mother’s identity in a court proceeding in 1807. Wife Susan Rittenhouse was the d/o Joseph Rittenhouse & Mary Ann Wright. It is a question who Moykee and son Richard lived with; probably her parents on Pavlica Road.

I notice that you have Elizabeth Heath 1793-1885 married to Abraham J. Williamson. She actually married just plain Abraham Williamson 1795-1862 in 1819. They moved to Philadelphia. Abraham J. married Elizabeth Sutphin. Lots of confusion about which Abraham married which Elizabeth in Hunterdon in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

I would really like to have some evidence that Elizabeth Heath c.1793-1885 was in fact the daughter of Andrew Heath d.1799. I don’t doubt that this was so, but need a document. Birthdate of c.1793 can be established by later census records. She married in 1819 Abraham Williamsons 1795-1862.
