The Sergeant family came to Delaware Township well before the Revolution. Outsiders can easily be identified by the way they pronounce the name—Sar-gent. It’s Sir-gent to those in the know. This is my second published version of the Sergeant tree, thanks to recent research into Raritan Township properties.

The Sergeant family has long been of interest to me, as I live not far from the village of Sergeantsville in Delaware Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. (Not to be confused with the other Delaware Twp. in Sussex County, NJ.) Recent research into the route planned for the Delaware Flemington Railroad (never built) showed me that the Sergeants were also residents of the Copper Hill area southwest of Flemington in Raritan Township. This updated version of the Sergeant Family Tree includes that recent research. But there will always be more information to discover and add.

The children of daughters are included here, but not their grandchildren. Surnames of spouses who have a family tree published on this website are highlighted in green. Additions and corrections are always welcome, either in the comments section below or by email. The family trees only go down six generations because this website is not very good at wide text columns. If you stretch your screen wide you will get a better view, with as little text wrap as possible.

First Generation:

(1) Joseph Sergeant (c.1735 – 1807) & Mary Marie Loman (c.1737 – after 1770)
Joseph Sergeant, Jr., blacksmith, miller and merchant, was the son of Joseph Sr. (c.1710-c.1747) and grandson of Jonathan Sergeant (c.1670-1732), merchant of Newark, NJ, & Hannah Nuttman (c.1680-1757). This Joseph Sr., whose spouse is unknown, moved to Bethlehem Township. I have not identified Sergeant’s property there, but he died intestate in Bethlehem Township in 1747. Curiously, administration of his estate was granted to Benjamin Smith of Amwell, with Job Warford of Amwell as surety. Sergeant was only 37 when he died, so it was most likely due to an accident.
As far as I know Joseph Sergeant, Sr. had only one child, Joseph, Jr., who married Marie Loman about 1758. During the time that Joseph and Marie’s children were being born, Joseph Sergeant was a “blacksmith of Amwell,” probably exercising his skills in a shop in today’s Sergeantsville. The stone building across from today’s Sergeantsville Inn was the location of his blacksmith shop.

Second Generation:

|   (2.1) Charles Sergeant (1760 – 1833)
|   |   m. 1) Sarah Green (1766 – 1835), d/o Samuel Green & Elizabeth Waterhouse
|   |   m. 2) Mary Lake (1773 – 1851), d/o John Lake & Sarah Ann Robins
|   (2.2) Loman Sergeant (1763 – 1852) & Lydia Wolverton (c.1766 – )
|   (2.3) Mary Sergeant (1765 – 1813) & Cornelius Lake (1762 – 1842)
|   (2.4) John Sergeant (c.1766 – after 1829) & Sarah Sally Kugler (c.1788 – ?)
|   (2.5) Joseph Sergeant (1769 – 1843) & Jane Quick (1770 – 1851)

Charles Sergeant, the eldest, was just barely old enough to participate in the Revolutionary War, which he did. His brothers did not. There is quite a time gap between the marriage dates for Charles, Loman and Mary, and the two youngest brothers, John and Joseph—20 years, which seems unlikely. Both John and Joseph were well into their 30s when they married, as were their wives.
By the time he died in 1807, their father, Joseph Sergeant, Jr., had moved to Tewksbury, where he died intestate in 1807. It’s possible his wife Marie survived him, but probably not by much. Her burial location has not been found. Joseph Sergeant, Jr. was buried in the Pine Hill Cemetery in Delaware Township, as was his father Joseph, Sr., even though he died in Bethlehem Township.
