As far as I am concerned, the Fauss family in Hunterdon County begins with Rev. Jacob Fauss and his wife Margaret Space, who settled in Amwell Township before the Revolution. His parents may have been living in Amwell township when he was born, I cannot say. He probably had a sister Catharine (c.1746 – 1821) who married a Yawger.
Some of this information came from the Jacob Fauss Family Bible, held by the Genealogical Society of New Jersey at the Alexander Library, Rutgers University. It was translated from the German, and a copy is on file at the Hunterdon County Historical Society.
Updates and corrections to the original tree were made on March 18, 2020, and again on February 13, 2022.
First Generation:
(1) Rev. Jacob Fauss (1740 – 1806) & Margaret Theiss/Space (1743 – 1830)
Margaret was the daughter of someone named Theiss or Space and a woman named Margaret (c.1714-1797). Following Space’s death, Margaret married second Elder Johann George Bechtelsheimer, who died before 1790.
The following is taken from the Jacob Fauss Bible:
“Births
December ye 6th 1740 I was born
October ye 26th 1743 my wife was born
Sept 15th 1767 I was married to Margaret Space
July 31st 1768 about 4 oclock in the morning my Daugter Elizabeth is born
January 6th 1777 about 7 oclock my son Samuel was born
January 16th 1790 about 11 oclock in the evening my Daughter Rebekah is born
Sept. 10th 1782 at 9 oclock in the evening my son John is born”
The Bible also listed deaths, including this one:
August 17th 1797 Died my Mother-in-Law Margaret Bechtelsheimer Aged 83 years at half an hour past 7 afternoon
As might be expected, bibles were treasured by Rev. Fauss. In his will dated September 29, 1805, he left to his son Samuel “my small Dutch handbill” and “my English quarto Bible,” and to son John his “Dutch quarto Bible.” Rev. Fauss’ will is one of the most detailed and well considered of the early Amwell wills.

Gretchen, I checked my records and see that I left Jacob Bodine (1c.1760-1801) & Mary Pickel (c.1769-1851) out of my Bodine tree. There is an interesting comment there by Jeff Perrine. I will try to update the tree soon.

Thank you! Your work has helped me work out some of my family history which includes Hoppocks (Elizabeth V. < Israel P. < Henry J.), Bodines (Susan C. and whover her parents and grandparents are), Woolvertons (Lydia < Charles, etc.) and more. So this has been fun to read! One reason I was digging a little deeper after finding Susan C. Bodine with the Rounsavells, is that is that Israel and Susan (Bodine) Hoppock named their first daughter, Elizabeth. And "Lizzie V." is found living with Harrison and Elizabeth Rounsavell in the 1880 Federal Census, rather than with her parents. She is 15 years old and listed as a cousin. So the families seem to have stayed in touch.
