The Lambert family was very prominent in old Amwell Township in the 18th and 19th centuries, beginning with John Lambert and Abigail Bumstead who came to Hunterdon County from Stonington, Connecticut about 1745, and settled in Kingwood Township. John Lambert’s ancestor, Francis Lambert, came to Salem, Massachusetts in 1638, but this tree will deal only with John and Abigail’s children and descendants.

Keep in mind that this tree is based primarily on information acquired through Hunterdon County records. There are plenty of gaps and unknowns. Please feel free to add additions and corrections in the Comments section. Also, my policy is to list the children of daughters, but not the grandchildren.

The Lambert family was related to a great many other notable families in lower Hunterdon County. To add links to all their trees would overwhelm my website, so I have highlighted surnames in green for which there is a published tree, which you will find on the Families Page.

I updated this tree on August 7, 2019 in order to add numbering and make just a few corrections.

First Generation:

(1) John Lambert (1687 – after 1764) & Abigail Bumstead (1685 – before 1763)

Notes:  After the tree was published Lora Olsen found the marriage and dates for Mary Elizabeth Lambert and husband Horace C. Pidcock, and for her sister Lucretia Lambert. Also, a husband has been found for Mary Lambert (6.5), d/o John and Mary Louisa Lambert, as well as her middle name and her death date.

Footnotes:

  1. Hannah was the daughter of John Little and Mary Longstreet of Monmouth Co., NJ, immigrants from Scotland. The Little family of Pittstown immigrated to NJ from Ireland and seem not to have been related.
  2. I am not at all sure about this couple. Whether Elizabeth was really a daughter of Capt. John & Mary Johnes Lambert; whether the John S. Wilson who served as freeholder for Delaware Township in the 1840s was the same as the one buried in the Barber Cemetery in 1851, and why wasn’t his wife Elizabeth buried there too?
  3. Here’s another quandary. Some researchers think that the Sarah Lambert who married Charles Smith in 1849 married second Thomas Seabrook c.1851. Which suggests that Charles Smith, about whom I can find no information, died soon after marrying. I have Sarah Lambert Seabrook as the daughter of Zephaniah & Anna Lambert. More research is needed.
  4. The James W. Hoppock who died in 1882 was the son of Ely Hoppock and Anna Bloom, and husband of Jane Fisher. I could not find good information on the James who was married to Sarah Lambert. He may have been the son of John Hoppock and Rebecca Wilson.
