Hoagland Family Tree

The Hoaglands (Hooglandts) came to New Netherland in the early to mid 1600s, along with the rest of the settlers of this Dutch colony. As so often happened, their children or grandchildren preferred to settled in the wilderness rather than the established colony, which is how Jan & Jacobe Hoagland came to Hunterdon County.

As is my usual practice, I have included the children of daughters but not their grandchildren. Surnames of spouses whose families also have a tree published on this website are highlighted in green. There are branches of this family that I have little to no information on. Therefore contributions to this tree are welcome, as well as corrections. First Generation:

(1) Jan Dircksen Hoagland (1666 – 1721) & Jacobe Schenk Ryerse (1668 – 1765)
I am not certain about Hoagland (Hooglandt)‚Äôs parents, but they were probably immigrants from the Netherlands. The same is probably true of his wife Jacobe. It is thought that the couple moved to Amwell Township in 1741 when they bought 278 acres from Henry Coat. This was probably the Henry Coate who purchased about 300 acres in Amwell bordering land of John Reading and Charles Wolverton, which puts the property in the Rosemont neighborhood. (See Traditions of Hunterdon by John Lequear, pp. 51-53.) Jan and Jacobe had ten children, but only two are known to have settled with their parents in Amwell Township, being son Derrick and son Adrian. This comes from a genealogy of the Hoagland family (Descendants of Jan Dircksen ‚ÄúDerrick‚Äù Hoagland) by Donna Tunison.
