The Rittenhouse Family in America has been studied at some length and genealogies have been published covering all branches in America. The earliest identified Rittenhouse was Wilhelm (1644-1708) who married Gertrude Pieters (1646-1708) in 1665 at Mulheim, Westphalia, Germany. This couple immigrated to Philadelphia shortly afterwards, where at least two children were born. Their son Garret or Gerard married Mary Shoemaker and had at least two children, one of whom was William, born in 1696, below.
One noticeable characteristic of the Rittenhouse family is their tendency to marry several times. Their spouses seem to have been susceptible to dying early. You may notice there are many “c.”s and question marks on the birth-death dates. Many members of this family are not well documented. Please feel free to add corrections or additions in the Comments section, below. (For more information on the Rittenhouse family, see Rittenhouse Cemetery, part one and The Rittenhouse Tavern. Also Rittenhouse Tavern, part two.)
Having published many family trees by now (see the Home Page for Families), I will highlight in Green the surnames of families that have published trees so far. (I am not adding the links for fear it might overwhelm my website.)
William Rittenhouse and Catharine Howell are treated here as the first generation because they are the first known settlers in Hunterdon County. They had 13 children, which helps to explain why the family was so prolific in the county. And also explains why I am only publishing four generations.

Footnotes:
- I originally listed her as Mary F. Nye, but there is no evidence that was her name, and at Linda Lyons’ suggestion, I have removed that surname. ↩

I note that the wife of Moses Rittenhouse Sr. is listed as Mary Nye. This is often said but I have never found a primary source for it. She later married Alburtus Ringo. Her house is still standing but incorporated into a newer structure.

Looking at my own ancestors in this tree, I see two things I would like to point out. This chart lists the wife of Moses Rittenhouse Sr. as Mary Nye. I have seen this reported before. I have looked extensively and have not been able to find a primary source for her birth name. Nor have I found any Nyes in the area. She is only in the record as Mary Rittenhouse or Mary Ringo after her second marriage.
The chart says that Edmund Rittenhouse, son of Moses Jr. and Sarah Wood, was born c. 1785. This is incorrect. He was born between 1801 and 1806. We know this because there is a 1815 guardianship record for him which tells us he was under 14 at that time. His father died in 1806. No record of his death has been found. He was last found in Bucks Co. tax records in 1828. HHS files says he died in “mid life.”

Samuel Freeman and Priscilla Rittenhouse Freeman settled in Southwest Ohio. Samuel Freeman was an original proprietor of Cincinnati, and dealed in land transactions. He is also credited as being the first white settler of Monroe Township, Miami County Ohio for which Freeman Prairie is named. Priscilla is buried in Mills (Wells) Cemetery and died on May 1823. Samuel, died 27 Nov 1821, is buried in Mount Zion Cemetery in Beaver Creek, Greene County, Ohio. The cemetery was probably land he once owned and the neighboring property was owned by his son William, also buried in the same plot.
Samuel Freeman and Priscilla are registered in the First Families of Ohio.
By any chance, does anyone know if Edmund Freeman married to Abigail Rittenhouse was brother to Samuel?
Thank you.

Thanks for the correction. I am just a little uneasy because Find-a-Grave did not provide a source for its information, but no doubt you are right.

Thanks for putting all this Rittenhouse information on the web. I ran across it while researching my Hill ancestors, one of whom is the William Hill (1743-1805) who a number of sources believe married Mary Rittenhouse (c.1748-c. 1803). Do you know of any source for the who his parents were?
Any help is much appreciated.

I have seen Lequear’s observation that Mary Rittenhouse married a Hill and removed from Hunterdon County. And I have a few Hill’s who might be the right age to be parents of William. But no proof. And I have a note (was it from Find-a-Grave?) that William Hill was born in Franklin Co., PA. The Hill family is not one I am closely familiar with, and Mary, being an 18th century woman, did not leave much in the way of records. Sorry I can’t help you more.

I have a relative Delilah Hill who married John Woods and her parents were William Hill and Mary Rittenhouse. I’m also looking for the Hill side if you have found any information that would be appreciated.

Found this site today, thank you for all of your work organizing this site. Began researching my ancestry in fits-n-starts 2 years ago. My own line is clear, but I get lost identifying near-relatives and determining who birthed who with whom. Will continue reading. Okay, Rittenhouse is my middle name, from my mother Florence’s last name. She always told me to be proud to be a Rittenhouse. I too am in William’s line, not David’s. My grandfather was Charles Rittenhouse. Any more information on our branch would be welcome.

Hello Martha,
I see it has been a few years since I posted that tree. It is probably time for me to update it with whatever new information I’ve picked up since then. Something to add to the to do list.
