When listing members of the Fox family living in Hunterdon County, it is important to distinguish between the English Fox family and the German one. This tree will deal with both families.
It is interesting to know that relatives of the original Quaker, George Fox of England, settled in Hunterdon County. However, they were not direct descendants. The Hunterdon English Fox family came from George Fox’s brother John Fox and his wife Ann Chambers.
The English Fox Family
First Generation:
George Fox (c.1670-after 1721) was the son of John Fox (c.1628-1718) and Ann Chambers (c.1630-1706) of England. George married in England in the 1670s an unknown wife and had a son Joseph about whom I have no information. He married second on Oct. 5, 1693 at Horninghold, Leicester, Jane Palmer, daughter of Christopher and Mary Palmer. George and Jane left for Burlington County, in the Province of West New Jersey around 1705 with children George and Mary. Their first three children either died young or remained in England.

| | | (4) Mary Fox (c.1702 – after 1748) & Roger Wolverton (1700 – 1748)
The third generation, George Fox and Jane Palmer, came to Amwell Township with two of their children, George and Mary. In 1719, George Fox bought a large farm from Charles Wolverton in Amwell Township. His children, George and Mary, married into the Wolverton family. Many Hunterdon families married in to the Fox Family, some of them having their own trees on this website. Their surnames are colored green. Go to the Families page where you will find links to their trees, a good example being the Wolverton Tree where Roger’s family is listed.

The German Fox Family
The German Fox family name began as Fuchs, but seems to have quickly morphed into Fox. The immigrant Johannes Peter Fuchs came from the Rhineland, but I have no good information about him or his spouse. And my information on their descendants is very limited.

Marfy –
It was a delight to check in with your blog and find an updated family tree for my favourite Hunterdon family. I have a few questions, suggestions, and, if I may so impose, a comment only tangentially related.
John Fox and Ann Chambers – I believe Ann is the Anne Chambers, baptised Horninghold 8 Sep. 1633, father Everard (Edward?), probably the Edward Chambers baptised Horninghold 23 March 1608, son of William and Anne (Horsepoole) Chambers. Anne Chambers Fox buried Horninghold 23 Nov. 1706.
George Fox and Jane Palmer – I am unfamiliar with the Rowland book you cite for an earlier marriage and a son Joseph (b. c. 1685), but I cannot find a record of either an earlier marriage nor a Joseph Fox in the Horninghold parish records. I am also not sure about the 1662 birth for George; I have John and Anne’s children as follows (all baptised Horninghold): Elizabeth, bap. 3 Nov. 1661, father John; Thomas, bap. 19 June 1664, father John; John, bap. 12 Aug. 1666, father John; George, bap. 14 Jan 1668 (presumably OS), father John, buried Horninghold 16 Jan. 1669, father John; GEORGE, bap. 18 Sep. 1670, father John, mother Ann; Abell, bap. 5 Jan. 1673, father John, mother Ann;, and William, bap. 27 April 1677, father John, mother Ann. As for Jane Palmer, I would suggest she is likely the Jane Palmer, baptised Horninghold 1 March 1670, father Thomas, mother Mary.
Absalom Abraham Fox and Ararat Waldron – Do you have any information on her? I know there were Waldrons at the time in Hunterdon County, but have been unable to make a connection to date? You would think with a name like Ararat it would not be that difficult. And who names a daughter Ararat in the first place?! I have a date of birth for Ararat (calculated from gravestone) of 17 March 1796. Meanwhile, additions to their tree (since Cornelia’s children are listed):
George Fox and A. Emeline Gordon:
a) Mary A Fox (6 Nov. 1843 – 13 May 1916), m. David Gallutia (my g-g-grandparents);
b) Melissa A. Fox, (21 Feb. 1848 – 3 Nov. 1919), m. Joseph N. Hathaway;
c) Amy Jane Fox, (Sep. 1849 – ?), m. (1) Christopher Baker (as his second wife), (2) Lewis David Richardson.
Rachel Fox and Preston M. Hubbell:
a) Eunice E. Hubbell (1843 – 1857);
b) Ellen A. Hubbell (4 March 1845 – 25 Sep. 1914), m. Lycurgus Duncanson;
c) Adelia J. Hubbell (c. 1847 – ?)
d) Malvina J. Hubbell (20 May 1853 – 23 Sep. 1874)
e) Mary E. Hubbell (1860 – ?)
f) Martha Nevada Hubbell (31 Jan. 1869 – 17 Oct. 1930), m. David L. Bradfield;
Nancy A. Fox and George Burton Hubbell:
a) Burton Hubbell (1843 – 1905) m. Alice Dunavan (sp?)
b) Charles P. Hubbell (29 May 1845 – 10 Oct. 1932), m. Ella Vail
c) Henna O. Hubbell (1847 – ?)
d) Lodema Hubbell (27 Nov. 1852 – 31 March 1934)
Amos W. Fox and Margaretta Tucker:
a) Caroline M. Fox (1864 – ?), and one other
Finally a quick comment with which I know you will wholeheartedly concur: As you can tell, I have done some research on this family, especially my line, helped in large measure by your excellent series of blogs a few years ago. The court records which you cited in the Mary Fox Goes to Court blog are largely available online through Family Search and I downloaded those and several others related to my family. But the online cases stop just prior to the Civil War and Absalom, upon his return to Hunterdon County, was involved in one for which I wanted a copy. Living some 500 miles from Flemington, and needing to be home each night, meant travel in person was not an option. So I sent an email to the Clerk’s office, inquiring as to whether I could obtain a copy of a particular case and what the cost would be. I received responses from Suzanne Bennet at the Clerk’s Office, along with Susan J. Hoffman, the Surrogate and Al Illiano, Records Management Analyst. Not only did I obtain a pdf file of what I had asked for, but the wonderful folks there in Hunterdon County took their own time and let me know there were other records of my family which might be of interest (absolutely!) and provided scans of those as well, all without accepting any remuneration from me! I was flabbergasted! I cannot say enough good things about the people there.
Thank you.

Thanks for the thoughtful and extensive comment.
Re Ararat Waldron: I have not researched the Waldron family, even so, there are 30 of them in my database. Probably the earliest I have is Francis of Amwell who died intestate in 1806. Also Jerome of Raritan Twp. 1760-1848. Both are possible parents. The name is obviously biblical, and biblical names are quite common in the 18th century. I don’t think it would have raised any eyebrows.
As for the people you mentioned, Suzanne Bennet, Susan J. Hoffman and Al Illiano, I am acquainted with all of them and must concur that they are exceptionally helpful and kind. And also interested in the County’s history, which is really a blessing!

Regarding Joseph Fox. Chris may very be right that he was not a child of George Fox. What I can say is that in 1756 he was Commissioner of Indian Affairs and attended the Council at Carlisle, PA. And in 1758 he was a member of a committee of the house of Representatives that met with Indians at Easton.

My mother’s father descended from Absalom Fox & Christina Bonham. The family tree is not well documented and it took a lot of sleuth work using DNA to finally iron it all out. Thank you for including the Fox family here so that I can learn more about my ancestry.

Hi Debe, I have been working on a Fox line for Amos Fox b. circa 1776 in Loudoun Co., Virginia. One of his male descendants recently tested on Family Tree with haplogroup BY 19687, which matches the haplogroup of Donald Fox who may be a descendant of Absalom Fox, though his son Bonham Fox and grandson Levi Fox b. 1802. I was intrigued that you had solved your family tree using DNA, hoping that you can let me know if your family DNA is on Family Tree or another site.

I am on ancestry and on Family Tree DNA and GED Match. Ancestry is the easiest for me to use and understand.

I would like to find information on my Fox line. I cannot find anything further than my great great grandfather William Fox who may of been born in Pennsylvania. I believe his wife was Franey Mowrer. Great grandfather was William James Fox born in 1844 in Bloom, Wood Co, Ohio and his wife was Mary Jane Kiersey. William James’ siblings were Levi, Mary Ann and Sarah that I can find.

Betty, your question gives me a chance to explain that although I dig into the history of Hunterdon County families like the Foxes, my knowledge of research resources beyond the boundaries of Hunterdon is really non-existent. If you should happen to come upon any link between your Pennsylvania Fox and Hunterdon, by all means let me know. Otherwise, I am sorry I cannot help you.
