This is a partial Bellis Family Tree, designed to show the ancestors of David Bellis, owner of John Lequear’s farm in Raritan Township, as described in “The Old Lequear Farm.” I had attempted to design a tree that covered all the descendants of Andreas and Maria Bellis, but that proved impossible based on the information I have found so far. So I decided to publish this partial tree and perhaps get to the rest of the family as more information comes my way. Apologies to those whose relatives are missing.
Addendum, May 30, 2020: After publishing, I came upon an article in the Democrat-Advertiser about the Bellis family, based on information from Theodore Bellis (unfortunately, the clipping I have does not have a date, but it was probably in the early 1900s). The history of the house and family was too interesting to pass up, so I have added information to this tree based on the article. Previously I had made additions in italics, but so much more has been added that I have removed them. Comments, however, will be in italics.
Addendum, Oct. 18, 2020: Some readers have been pointing out omissions to the tree, so I’ve added more names.
First Generation:
(1) Andreas Bollesfelt/Bellis Jr. (c.1665 – )
and wife Maria Schnuch (c.1670 – )
Second Generation:
I am certain Andreas and Maria had more than three children, but these are three I am aware of. But records are very confusing, and the persistent use of ‘Johan’ as a first name does not help. I’m not at all certain the order is correct, either.

As you can see there is a problem here. Frona was still alive when Catharine Kempel was married to Bellis. Better information is needed.
| (2.3) Johann Adam Bellis & Catharine Calstan/Kolscher
The couple married and came to America in 1739 where all their children were born. They bought 200 acres in the Stevenson tract at Copper Hill and built a log house there. The house was later replaced by the one shown in the photograph. Regrettably I do not know what year that photograph was taken. The Democrat Advertiser began publication in 1881.

| | | | | | | m. 1) Rachel Ann Rittenhouse (c.1832 – )
| | | | | | | m. 2) Amy M. Rittenhouse (1834 – 1858)
Note: There was another John Bellis (c.1830-after 1866) married to Rachel Ann Warrick (c.1835-after 1866), daughter of John Warrick (c.1787-1866) and Elizabeth Furman (c.1810-c.1837). I have been unable to fit this John Bellis into the Bellis family because his dates are so close to those of John Bellis 6.3 above.

I am curious, because in the Early Germans of New Jersey and also the Snell book of Hunterdon County, the father for Adam, Peter, William (Wilhelm) and John (not mentioned in your article) was William Bollesfelt/Bellis who was naturalized in 1730 in New Jersey. I thought Andreas was a brother to William. Just asking. I have other children for Andreas. I’d love to collaborate, because I’m attempting to find the connection of my 6th ggf Henry Bellis of Scott County, Kentucky back to the New Jersey Bellis families. I have numerous DNA connections with New Jersey Bellis’ and remarkably all the families that intermarried with the Bellis’. But, because many of the records in the courthouse were burned at numerous times, we’ve not been able to determine his connection as of yet. Any collaboration and information would be very helpful. We think his wife, Mary Bellis, was a Bowlby, but are still working that line too.
