The Oak Tree by Thomas Bewick

This is a partial Bellis Family Tree, designed to show the ancestors of David Bellis, owner of John Lequear’s farm in Raritan Township, as described in “The Old Lequear Farm.” I had attempted to design a tree that covered all the descendants of Andreas and Maria Bellis, but that proved impossible based on the information I have found so far. So I decided to publish this partial tree and perhaps get to the rest of the family as more information comes my way. Apologies to those whose relatives are missing.

Addendum, May 30, 2020:  After publishing, I came upon an article in the Democrat-Advertiser about the Bellis family, based in information from Theodore Bellis (unfortunately, the clipping I have does not have a date, but it was probably in the early 1900s). The history of the house was too interesting to pass up, so I have added information to this tree based on the article. Additions are in italics.

First Generation:

(1) Andreas Bollesfelt/Bellis Jr. (c.1665 – ) & Maria Schnuch (c.1670 – )

Second Generation:

|     (2.1) Johann Wilhelm Bellis (c.1702 – 1775) & Catharina Kempel (~1720 – )
|     (2.2) Johann Adam Bellis (1706 – 1761) & Catharine Calstan/Colsch/Kolscher ? (1718 – 1804)
|     (2.3) Johann Peter Bellis (~1710 – 1767) & Elisabetha Christina Nollen ( – 1755) removed to Sussex Co.

Question: How does Mary Bellis fit in?
|     (2.4) Mary Bellis (1723-1772) & Johann Peter Rockafellar (
Thought to be the daughter of a William Bellis 1697-1772, who would be the right age to be a son of Andreas & Maria, but apparently is not.

Third Generation:

|     (2.2) Johann Adam Bellis & Catharine Calstan

The couple married and came to America in 1739 where all their children were born. They bought 200 acres in the Stevenson tract at Copper Hill and built a log house there. The house was later replaced by the one shown in the photograph. Regrettably I do not know what year that photograph was taken. The Democrat Advertiser began publication in 1881.
