Like the Hunt and Vandolah families, the Butterfoss family was one of the earliest to settle in Hunterdon County. But where they came from or exactly when I cannot say. Butterfoss suggests a German name, but I have found nothing to confirm that. I hope there are some Butterfoss descendants out there who can help out.

As with all the other family trees, most of the people listed here lived in Hunterdon County for at least part of their lives. I have listed the children of women with the Butterfoss name, but not their grandchildren, as they belong in another family tree. Please add any corrections or additions to the comments section below.

First Generation:

(1) Andrew Butterfoss (1720 – 1759) & Anna Moore (1726 – 1790)

It is not known who Andrew Butterfoss’s parents were or where they came from. Anna Moore is thought to have been English, but her parents are also unknown. Since their eldest child (as far as we know) was born in 1742, I have estimated Andrew’s birth date as 1720. It is thought that he died in 1759 or 1760, although there was no estate recorded for him.

If the death date is correct, then Andrew Butterfoss was only about 39 years old when he died, leaving his wife with six children to raise. She married second William Horner (c.1720-c.1790) and had three more children by him.

I normally don’t include the grandchildren of female members of a family, but occasionally make exceptions.

Footnotes:

  1. Andrew Butterfoss was a Revolutionary War veteran. His wife Rebecca’s family is not known.
  2. The Bible Record for the Daniel & Esther Butterfoss family can be found at the Special Collections at Rutgers University Library, holdings of the NJ Genealogical Society. It provides the birth dates of Daniel’s children , but not the death dates.
  3. Andrew Butterfoss was a Revolutionary War veteran who was crippled after the war and never prospered. His sons were laborers, not land owners, and his daughters married and moved away. In other words, I have virtually no information on this family. The children’s names come from a pension application.
  4. There are no marriages listed for the Pidcock children, other than the one for Charles.
  5. I’ve got a problem separating this Thomas from the one born to Robert Sharp and Rachel Ent. It seems they both married a woman named Rebecca. One was Rebecca Lambert (1813-1885), daughter of Daniel Lambert and Polly Sharp. She married Thomas Sharp on June 18, 1831, but which Thomas Sharp? In 1850 there were two Thomas Sharps living in Delaware Township married to women named Rebecca. One was 52 years old (born c.1798), the other was 43 (born c.1807). The Rebecca’s were ten years apart. The one who was 37 was the one born in 1813. She was married to the younger Thomas. There is a hint here. In the household of Thomas Sharp age 43 (born 1807) and Rebecca age 37, was Sealy Sharp, age 59 (born 1791). He was the son of Robert Sharp and Rachel Ent, and brother of Thomas. In the household of the other Thomas and Rebecca were Mary L. Vandolah, age 23 (born c.1827) and her husband Garret W. Vandolah age 30 (born about 1820). This pretty much clinches it. Whoever the Rebecca was who married Thomas Sharp, son of William, was not Rebecca Lambert. But if you consult Find-a-Grave, you will find the wife of Thomas Sharp, son of William, as Rebecca Lambert. I must disagree, but cannot say who this other Rebecca was.
