Descendants of Jonas Sutton (1721-1797)

Jonas Sutton, the first of that surname to settle in Amwell Township, was married twice. His first wife’s name is not known, but she had five children. His second wife, Elizabeth Runyon, appears to have been related to the Runyon family of Franklin Township. They came to Hunterdon from Piscataway at an early date. Elizabeth also had five children, making ten in all. Because my focus is on Hunterdon County, I am missing information on many of the Suttons who lived elsewhere. Feel free to contribute information, or suggest corrections, in the comments section.

Olive Barrack Rowland wrote in 1935 that there was a Sutton Family Bible, in private hands, i.e., one Mrs. Witfield Taylor of Locktown.1

The Sutton Bible states that a Jonas Sutton was born on July 25, 1748 and died on October 3, 1795. This was Jonas Sutton, Jr. Because he was born in 1748, he had to be the son of Jonas’ first wife. There was a copy of a marriage certificate in the bible for John Sutton and Dinah Bonham of Kingwood, who were married by Rev. David Sutton on Dec. 8, 1773. Witnesses were Uriah Bonham, Anchor Bonham, Malakiah Bonham, Edward Thatcher, William Sutton, John Sutton, David Howell, Henry Rounsaville.

Jonas Sutton of Amwell wrote his will on March 25, 17972 providing wife Elizabeth “what moveables pleaseth her to keep,” and also use of his land jointly with son Amos, while a widow. His son Amos was to have the remainder of his personal estate and all his real estate. Amos was named executor and was charged with the task of paying legacies to his siblings: Jonathan, Jonas, Nathan, and Prudence, and to the children of son William (daughter Elizabeth excepted.) Legacies were also to be paid to the children of John, Sarah and Joshua, who were the children of Jonas Suttons’ first wife. 3

This is not an exhaustive list of Sutton descendants. I only have members of the south Hunterdon families, and not all of them. Surnames in green have published trees. This family tree was updated on 11/21/2020.

Footnotes:

  1. See Olive Barrack Rowland, An Ancestral Chart & Handbook; Genealogical Notes on Sutton and Rittenhouse Families of Hunterdon County, NJ. Richmond, VA, 1935. I tried to find a copy online for sale, but could not. Parts of it seem to be online, but not the whole book.
  2. NJA #1815J
  3. I am a little uncertain about daughter Prudence. She was included with the children of Elizabeth Runyon, but her birth date from Find-a-Grave (#135758649) is c.1745, which means she had to have been a child of Sutton’s first wife. Dennis Sutton has been researching this family for many years. You can see his work at http://njsuttonfamily.org/.
