This Kitchen family arrived in Hunterdon County in the early 1720s, and quickly became established. I’ve published this tree to support “Kitchen’s Mill,” my article about property in Sand Brook, Hunterdon County, owned by Henry Kitchen and his son Samuel.
There are other Kitchens who appeared in Hunterdon County, but I do not know if they were connected to Henry and his brothers or not. They are listed at the end of the page. Children of Kitchen daughters are included but not grandchildren. Surnames of spouses who have a family tree on this website are highlighted in green.
First Generation:
(1) Unknown Kitchen of Salem, Massachusetts ?
Most researchers identify the Kitchen brothers of Hunterdon (second generation) as sons of a John Kitchen of Salem, Massachusetts. However, I have not seen convincing evidence that the John Kitchen who did reside in Salem was actually the father of the three brothers.

Other Unknown Kitchens:
- William Kitchen (c.1700-) m. 1) Rebecca Wells; 2) Martha Van Buskirk; son Thomas b. 1723 Solebury had 4 children, daughter Sarah m. George Wall, Esq. An Ancestry family tree states whe was the daughter of Samuel & Mary Kitchen, but that Sarah married an Eick, and was born in the early 1750s.
- William Kitchen (1761-1813), m. Alice Beam and removed to Ontario. There is some thought he might have been the son of Samuel and Mary, but I believe he was born too late.
- A Jonathan P. Kitchen died intestate in 1816.
- A man named Kitchen was married to Phebe Pidcock (c.1780-?), daughter of Jonathan Pidcock (c.1729-c.1812).
- Catharine Kitchen (c.1780 – ), m. 1801 Solomon Rake
- Thomas Kitchen, died 1856, age 70 (b.c. 1785)
- A Rebecca Kitchen, b. c. 1805, was married in 1829 to Samuel Bailey
Thanks to Kitchen descendants who have contacted me after this tree was first published. I have been gradually adding to the tree as a result.
Footnotes:
- Researchers have claimed that Samuel’s wife was Mary Garrison, but I believe that Mary Garrison, daughter of John Garrison and Hannah Oliphant, was married to Joseph Kitchen, not Samuel. ↩
- Margaret’s mother Mary wrote her will on Oct. 4, 1799 naming her children; Margaret Kitchen was not named. ↩
- Mott was named Mary Kitchen’s executor in 1799, and was alive when her will was proved in 1805. ↩

Marfy, I was pleased to see the Kitchen Tree, buy now I’m stumped. Solomon Rake married Catherine “Caty” Kitchen July 25, 1801 in the Kingwood Baptist Church. Catherine appears in the Dr. Jonathan Bowne’s ledger under Solomon Rake title two times. The first time was a visit about three weeks after their first son, Samuel K. Rake, was born and then again in Dec. 1807. I thought Catherine was a daughter to (3)Samuel and Mary Kitchen or maybe Samuel was her grandfather based on the dates. Maybe the (4) Samuel, son of Wheeler? Catherine is not listed in the tree at all. Any thoughts?

Geoff, Catharine is a loose end. If she was related to Samuel & Mary Kitchen, it would have to be as a granddaughter, I think. One possibility is Henry Kitchen, brother of Samuel, who married Jane Robins. I have very little information on that family.

Hello,
I’ve been researching my maternal line, which includes William Maxwell (1745-1811) as my 5x grandfather. William was the husband of Susanna Kitchen (1745-?). In examining William’s marriage to Susanna Kitchen, I came across a Colonial Marriages (1665-1799) reference to the marriage of Sarah Kitchen (Susanna’s 1st cousin) and John Eick (Eicke) in the New Jersey State Archives Searchable Database. I noticed that you didn’t have the marriage date for Sarah and John. The NJ State Archives site identifies the marriage date as October 22, 1782.

Hello,
I’m a newbie, and I want to trace the lineage of my 3x GGM Phebe Ann Kitchen, and all I know is that she was b. 1840/41, and married to Jacob Claytor, b. 23 MAR 1832, d. 17 DEC 1899.
I have guesses on her lineage, but wondered if anyone here could help?
Thank you,

A relative of mine who has compiled a Kitchen genealogy thinks that this Henry was probably our ancestor:
(4.2) Henry Kitchen (c.1745 – after 1799) m. 1770 Elizabeth Jewell (c.1750 – ), left H.C.
(4.3) William Kitchen (c.1747 – after 1799) m. 1779 Sarah Lee (c.1750 – ), left H.C.
William moved to Upper Canada (Ontario) and died in Grimsby, Niagara District, in 1813. Henry seems to have signed on to the Continental Army in 1776. The Continental Army went through several re-orgs in its early days and by looking at the re-org current at the time of enlistment it is possible to get an approximate date for his enlistment. Henry is listed in the Valley Forge muster rolls as a pvt in the 3rd New Jersey Volunteers, Capt Jeremiah Ballard’s Company.
http://valleyforgemusterroll.org/muster.asp
But something happened to Henry in late Aug of 1780. He seems to have deserted the Continental Army. Two days after he deserted, he is listed as a volunteer in the muster rolls of the Loyal American Regiment. This regiment was commanded by one Benedict Arnold around this time.
Did he jump or was he pushed? No one really knows. Maybe he was picked up by the Brits and pressed: “Join us or spend the rest of the war on a prison hulk in New York Harbor.” Maybe he was disgusted with the Continental Army. Shortly after Henry deserted, the 3rd NJ mutinied (complaints of no shoes, no food, no pay, and grievances over when enlistments were up). Washington brought in troops from New England, surrounded the unit and forced the mutineers to shoot their ringleaders. The unit was disbanded and the soldiers folded into the 1st and 2nd NJ regiments in January of 1781.
LAR muster rolls are available online for 1783:
http://www.royalprovincial.com/military/musters/loyamregt/mrlarmain.htm
At the end of the war, Henry was among some 33,000 Loyalists who were transported out of New York by the British and given land grants in various parts of Canada. Many of these, including Henry, were among the 1st settlers of New Brunswick.
Kitchens seem to have long memories of these events. Some years ago, a cousin of mine was traveling the back roads somewhere where PA, WVa, and MD converge. He came across a row of mailboxes all with the Kitchen name. Curious, he decided to stop and see if there was any relationship. At the first house, he explained the he was a Kitchen from Canada. Before he got any further, the woman yelled at him, “You’re from the traitor side of the family!” and slammed the door in his face!
