I have written quite a bit about Daniel & Mary Robins. They arrived in Amwell Township as early as 1715, making the family among the earliest to physically settle in Hunterdon County. Despite the hardship of raising a family in the wilderness, the Robins succeeded very well. So well, that they got the attention of a newspaper writer.
On July 30, 1733, an article appeared in the New England Weekly Journal as well as The Boston Gazette, describing Daniel Robins’ remarkable health and longevity under such trying circumstances, as well as the prolific family he and wife Mary raised. Just a few months later, on Oct. 1, 1733, the story was reprinted in The Penny London Post, under the heading “Foreign Affairs.” It was indeed noteworthy. (Many thanks to Roberta Jaffer for sharing a copy of this news article.)
As you will see, Daniel and Mary Robins had many more children than are accounted for here. Part of the explanation is that daughters got subsumed into the families of their husbands, and their maiden names were forgotten (much to the frustration of genealogists), which also explains why the women who married into the Robins family so frequently lacked their maiden names, and sometimes even their given names. Another explanation is that in the 1730s, record-keeping was a very low priority.
All the family trees on this website are focused on residents of Hunterdon County. Children of daughters are included but not granddaughters. As is my custom, surnames of spouses whose families also have published trees on this website are highlighted in green. Daniel Robins was in his mid 40s by the time he came to Amwell Township in Hunterdon County from Monmouth County. In 1725 he was one of the Chosen Freeholders, and in 1727 he and his wife attended the Friends Meeting at Buckingham, PA and requested a certificate. When the article above was published, Robins was then 66 years old, and although he was in good health, he only lived four more years.

Footnotes:
- 12/7/20: Susanna’s surname Hopkins needs proof. She may have been confused with the family of George Hopkins of Monmouth County who wrote his will on Sept. 15, 1775 naming one Richard Robins, “my friend,” his executor. But George Hopkins did not name a daughter Susannah in his will, and I have no information on whether this Richard Robins had a son Isaac. Thanks to Marshall Lake for calling this into question. ↩

I believe that 3.6 Lydia Robins was married not to Edward Parlier but to his brother Peter Parlee (probably c1760). They moved to Bucks Co., PA c1773. Peter was a Loyalist serving with the 3rd Batt. NJ Volunteers from 1777. Property was confiscated and they were forced to move with 5 sons to New Brunswick (Canada) in 1783. The children listed here I believe are Edward’s (mother unknown), but not Lydia’s. Proof of Peter’s marriage to Lydia Robins is still illusive, but his wife was definitely Lydia and Robbins appears as a given name later in the family including a gr dau. named Lydia Robbins Parlee.

Thank you John. Given how few records are available for this time period, your argument makes sense to me.

Yes I am a descendant and John E is correct that Lydia married Peter Parlee

I have the family of Peter & Lydia Parlee pretty well documented from the time of their move to Bucks Co., PA, but would love to find any documentation of the family in Hunterdon County. The Edward mentioned above is (apparently) a brother of Peter and an apparent sister, Elizabeth was married to Nathaniel Parks of Kingwood.

This passage is from The History of Applejack by Harry B. Weiss. “In Bloomsbury, Snell in 1881 recorded three distilleries. The first was built by Daniel Stires in the bend of Little York Road, just below the arch bridge of the Central Railroad. By 1881, there was no trace of it. The second was on the site of Huffman’s sawmill. The third was built by Jonathan Robbins on the farm occupied by Moses Robbins in 1881, a little west of the village of Bloomsbury.” Do you have any idea where Moses Robbins’ farm was located?

I took a look at the deeds recorded for both Moses and his father Jonathan, and realized it would take a lot of work to figure out an answer to your question. Long list of deeds for Jonathan–in fact, I’m beginning to think there were two Jonathan Robins/Robbins, the one in Union and the one in Amwell. As for Moses, the deeds don’t help, and the Beers Atlas of 1873 does not indicate distilleries. Since I am very unfamiliar with that neck of the woods, I must regretfully give up on this question.

Thanks so much for checking on that! I’ll let you know where the distillery was if I ever figure it out.

I came across research this morning citing Genealogical and Personal Memories of Mercer County, New Jersey, Vol. 1 edited by Francis Bazley Lee, The Lewis Publishing Company, New York, Chicago, 1907. It identifies additional children of Daniel Robins Jr. and Mary as further including:
Timothy Robins (c. 1702) m. 7 Mar 1745 to Ruth Smith in Upper Freehold, Monmouth County, New Jersey
Richard Robins (c. 1710 – c. 1787) as having died in Randolph County, NC
Elizabeth Robins (May 1713-11 Nov 1748) m. 18 Feb 1739 to John Morford in Monmouth County
Ephraim Robins (1717 – 22 July 1808) buried in Allentown Presbyterian Cemetery, Allentown, Monmouth County (notes that this son is uncertain)
Deborah Robins (abt 1723-1791) m. 1742 to Jonathan Petit
Hannah Robins (abt 1725) m. 1 Nov 1745 to James Cox
I have no idea of the accuracy of this, but does provide some additional leads on the Robins family.

Interesting. It does make me wonder, though, if this might be a different Daniel Robins, simply because none of these children are connected with Hunterdon County. Perhaps it just means that Robins did not move to Amwell Twp until his children had reached adulthood, and these younger children preferred to remain in Monmouth.
