Thomas and Samuel McPherson seem to have arrived in Hunterdon County at about the same time, in the mid 18th century. It is quite likely they were related, but I found no proof, and am therefore playing it safe and publishing their trees separately here. Thomas’ family comes after Samuel’s.
As usual, I have some doubts about these trees and will happily welcome additions and corrections. Unfortunately, comments are no longer possible on this website. To contribute to the article, you must email me at marfyg@goodspeedhistories.com. New information & corrections will get added, with notations in a future newsletter.

(1) Samuel McPherson Sr. (1709 – 1772) & Rebecca Drake (1716 – after 1785)
As far as I can tell, Thomas (below) and Samuel were not related, but I may be wrong. It is possible that Thomas was Samuel’s first child. What is most likely, both men were Irish immigrants.

Heirs of Thomas McPherson
Almost immediately after first publishing this branch of the McPherson Tree, I found a major error, and have repaired it, hoping that no one caught my mistake.
First Generation:
(1) Thomas McPherson (c.1730 – 1784) & Ann Molleson (c.1730 – )
A likely Irish immigrant who arrived in Monmouth County before removing to Kingwood Twp., Hunterdon with wife Ann Molleson sometime before 1778. (No information on Ann’s family.) Thomas died intestate, and his estate was administered by sons Reuben and David. There is a Thomas McPherson buried in the Nixon-Craven burying ground in Franklin Township, but no dates are legible on the stone.
Second Generation:
(1) Thomas McPherson & Ann Molleson
| (2.1) Rebecca McPherson (c.1750 – ) & Thomas King (c.1750 – 1828)
| (2.2) Reuben McPherson (1754 – 1793) & Elizabeth Barrows Leigh (1753 – 1825)
| (2.3) David McPherson (c.1758 – ) & Sally Allen (c.1775 – )
Note that David removed to Hopewell Township; I do not have information on his family. I also have not pursued the family of Thomas & Rebecca King.
Third Generation:
(1) Thomas McPherson & Ann Molleson
| (2.2) Capt. Reuben McPherson & Elizabeth Barrows Leigh
| | (3.1) Thomas McPherson (1776 – 1832) & Mary Chamberlin (c.1782 – 1868)
| | (3.2) Gershom McPherson (1778 – bef. 1785)
| | (3.3) Sarah McPherson (1781 – 1831) & George Case (1774 – 1840)
Note: In my original version of the Thomas McPherson Tree, I got the marriage of George Case wrong; following the death of Sarah McPherson, Case married Sarah Barton (1797-1845), widow of Reuben McPherson (#2.2-3.8, below)
| | (3.4) Anna McPherson (1782 – 1856) & Daniel Pierson Esq. (1785 – 1855)
| | (3.5) Rebecca McPherson (1783 – )
| | (3.6) Gershom David McPherson (1785 – c.1827) & Ellen
| | (3.7) Mary McPherson (1790 – ) & George Teeple (c.1790 – )
| | (3.8) Reuben McPherson (1793 – 1831) & Sarah Barton (1797 – 1845)
Fourth Generation:
(1) Thomas McPherson & Ann Molleson
| (2.2) Capt. Reuben McPherson & Elizabeth Barrows Leigh
| | (3.1) Thomas McPherson & Mary Chamberlin
| | | (4.1) Thomas McPherson (1813 – 1890) & Rachel Brewer (1816 – c.1864)
| | | (4.2) Elizabeth McPherson (c.1818 – )
| | | (4.3) Mary Ann McPherson (c.1821 – 1900) & William Cronce (c.1821 – )
| | | (4.4) Samuel C. McPherson (1828 – 1904) & Mary Ann Rea (1831 – 1917)
| | (3.3) Sarah McPherson & George Case
| | | (4.1) Rebecca Case (c.1800 – )
| | | (4.2) Francis Case (1803 – 1804)
| | | (4.3) Elizabeth Ann Case (1808 – 1826)
| | | (4.4) Margaret Case (1810 – 1879)
| | | (4.5) Mary L. Case (1813 – 1891) & John Howard Johnson (1811 – 1891)
| | | (4.6) John Quincy Case (1821 – 1898) & Sarah Elizabeth Johnson (1818 – 1906)
| | | (4.7) Joseph G. Case (1826 – 1855) & Elizabeth Ann (c.1828 – 1848)
| | | (4.8) Margaret Case (1831 – 1889) & Holcombe Warford (c.1812 – 1886)
| | (3.4) Anna McPherson & Daniel Pierson Esq.
| | | (4.1) Mary Pierson (1808 – 1887) & John Pegg (1805 – 1862)
| | | (4.2) Susan Elizabeth Pierson (1811 – 1890)
| | | | | m. 1) John D. Rodenbaugh (c.1805 – 1833)
| | | | | m. 2) David Case (1815 – 1894)
| | | (4.3) John Pierson (1817 – 1888) & Elizabeth Gulick Emmons (1821 – after 1880)
| | | (4.4) Jacob S. Pierson (1819 – 1885) & Ellen R. Emmons (1824 – ~1900)
| | | (4.5) Reuben Pierson (1823 – 1903) & Mary Kuhl (1822 – 1903)
| | | (4.6) Daniel Hebron Pierson (1826 – 1881) & Hannah C. Buchanan (1832 – 1891)
| | | (4.7) Joseph B. Pierson (1830 – ) & Mary Case (c.1835 – )
| | (3.8) Reuben McPherson & Sarah Barton
| | | (4.1) Mary McPherson (1816 – 1885) & Jacob Dilts Snyder (1803 – 1868)
| | | (4.2) Charity McPherson (1818 – 1898) & John F. Marshall (1807 – 1874)
| | | (4.3) John Barton McPherson (1821 – 1884) & Sarah Ann Bush (1820 – 1913)
| | | (4.4) Elizabeth McPherson (1823 – 1882) & Sidney L. Bush (c.1815 – bef. 1895)
| | | (4.5) Nancy McPherson (1825 – 1827)
| | | (4.6) Reuben McPherson Jr. (1831 – 1902) & Abigail Tomson, left Hunterdon
Sarah Barton (1797-1845) had me confused. I hope I have things straightened out. Following the death of Reuben McPherson in 1831, his widow, Sarah Barton, married George Case in 1838. She is not to be confused with Reuben’s sister Sarah McPherson (1781-1831) who was the first wife of George Case, and who died the same year that Reuben McPherson did. Note that Sarah Ann Bush and Sidney L. Bush were siblings.
