Civil War Taxes–Part Two

After discovering the Civil War tax lists available online (more about that here), I was inspired to read the legislation (The Revenue Act of 1864) and to write about the residents of Hunterdon who were listed in the tax levy of 1865. Since this is a time of remembrance of the Civil War, it seemed appropriate. The article will appear in the spring issue of “Hunterdon Historical Newsletter” published by the Hunterdon County Historical Society. Even though the editor graciously allowed me two full pages, I found myself frustrated by how much I had to leave out. Which is why blogs are so wonderful.

The Delaware Township Historical Society is anxious to map these institutions, so it is time to begin an inventory.

It’s been a long time since I wrote anything about the Green family. It was Samuel Green who got me started on this series of posts about early West New Jersey. Now that I’m up to 1690, it’s time to take another look at the Greens.

Coxe’s Letter to the West Jersey Proprietors

In 1689, affected by the uncertainty of the times, the West Jersey Proprietors wrote to Daniel Coxe that they would proclaim him governor if he would just provide his own writ of quo warranto. They “stressed the urgency of the situation” but Coxe, who also felt the uncertainty of the times, delayed his answer for several months.¹

Sometimes you stumble upon a source of information that just knocks your socks off. This is one.

I was researching some names in the Holcombe-Riverview cemetery north of Lambertville when Ancestry.com gave me a glimpse of this amazing source of information of which I was heretofore unaware. For learning about mid-19th century New Jersey residents, this just can’t be beat. I’m talking about the Civil War tax assessment lists that the National Archives have allowed Ancestry.com to digitize. Here’s a sample page:

“Burlington Records”

In this post [under “Early Estates”], I mentioned a source identified by William Nelson in Abstracts of Wills, N. J. Archives, as “Burlington Records.” This mystified me but I did not pursue it. Fortunately for me, a reader, Jeff Moore, took the trouble to visit the State Archives and ask Bette Epstein about it. She informed him that the record is titled “Burlington Records 1680.” Jeff referred me to this link on the NJDARM website where the Records are listed as Reel 6, GSU #459321. Jeff pointed out that the GSU number is the same as the Family History Catalog film number (“FHL”), and that a film of the records can be obtained from the Family History Library.
