Most people who decide to research their properties head straight to the Search Room in the County Clerk’s Office to find the earliest deed they can. I understand the impulse—that’s exactly what I did over 30 years ago. But experience has taught me there is a better way to get started. I recently gave a talk on this subject for the Hunterdon County 300th Anniversary speakers’ series. It gave me a chance to boil down my approach to a few simple rules. Here they are:

On Saturday (June 1st) I visited the Hunterdon County Historical Society in Flemington to see what had become of the familiar old Deats Memorial Library. Significant changes have been taking place there, triggered by the need to meet building requirements for handicap access. The results are impressive, and I am looking forward to spending time in these new digs.
I don’t do book reviews, so this is not that. But I just got my copy of New Jersey, A History of the Garden State, edited by Maxine N. Lurie and Richard Veit, with an introduction by Marc Mappen, and I’ve got to say—run out and get this book! It’s a terrific collection of articles on the different periods in New Jersey’s history, starting with Richard Veit’s excellent first chapter on Native Americans who lived here, as far back as 12,000 years ago and into the colonial period. Thank you Rich. It came just in time to help me sort out this confusing history for my own blog.
I’m really looking forward to reading the next chapters, because they are all written by the top people in the field: Michael Birkner, John Fea, Howard Gillete Jr., Brian Greenberg, Larry Greene, Graham Russell Gao Hodges, Paul Israel, Maxine N. Lurie, G. Kurt Piehler and Richard Viet.
No doubt about it. If you love New Jersey, you’ll love this book.
People Mentioned in the Letters of John Lambert to Susan M. Hoppock, arranged alphabetically first by given names that have no surnames, then by surname (married women are listed under their maiden names).
I have begun to realize that it is a challenge to keep track of all the people mentioned by John Lambert, mostly family but also friends and neighbors. So here is a list of them all so far, which I will add to whenever someone new is mentioned. This is most definitely a work in progress, and any help that readers can lend me for some of my mysteries will be most appreciated. The latest issue of the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey is out (vol. 86, no. 1), and the first article, “Burlington Waterlots Surveyed,” is just amazing. C. Miller Biddle, a descendant of the original Biddle family, has written a detailed description of the ownership of the water lots in the town of Burlington when they were first laid out.
He has also given us succeeding owners, sometimes into the early 19th century. He begins with the London side of town, west of High Street, and I gather he will eventually treat the Yorkshire side as well. Dr. Biddle’s research is truly impressive, and I expect these articles will be the last word on the subject, so be sure to look out for future installments.
I am going to collect in this post (and add to it over time) the sources used for the early history of the Province of West New Jersey. It will serve as a way to collect in one place all the sources used, and at the same time, make each post a little less cumbersome to read (I hope).
This article is waiting for some major updating.
In this post [under “Early Estates”], I mentioned a source identified by William Nelson in Abstracts of Wills, N. J. Archives, as “Burlington Records.” This mystified me but I did not pursue it. Fortunately for me, a reader, Jeff Moore, took the trouble to visit the State Archives and ask Bette Epstein about it. She informed him that the record is titled “Burlington Records 1680.” Jeff referred me to this link on the NJDARM website where the Records are listed as Reel 6, GSU #459321. Jeff pointed out that the GSU number is the same as the Family History Catalog film number (“FHL”), and that a film of the records can be obtained from the Family History Library.
Once again, Jerseyman has caught me by surprise. He has published a fascinating post relating to early maneuvering before the first Quaker settlers arrived in the Delaware River.

Under instructions from the Quaker trustees, James Wasse and Richard Guy had a survey made by Richard Hancock, which was published by John Thornton and Robert Green and titled “A Mapp of Virginia Mary-land, New-Jarsey, New-York & New England,” probably around 1677 or 1678. It showed three designated areas for settlement, one being at “Bethlem” which became Gloucester, another called Antioch where Salem was located, and the third was 5000 acres at the Falls.
This past Saturday, a group of Reading descendants, who have joined together as “The Mount Amwell Project,” gathered in Sergeantsville for one of their regular meetings. I was honored to be asked to speak to the group, and took the opportunity to try out on them a first chapter to a history of Delaware Township that focused on John Reading and his discovery of “Mount Amwell.”
What follows is a list of the more commonly used sources for Hunterdon history and genealogy. This is in addition to archival material to be found in the Hunterdon County Clerk’s Office and the Hunterdon Surrogate’s Court.
Many of these books and pamphlets are out of print and can only be found in libraries. You might find some of them on Google Books, but so far very few have gone online. Some of the Hunterdon sources can be purchased from the Hunterdon County Historical Society. The Hunterdon County Library has a very good list of sources. Use the link to the Library.
